Head Trauma and Concussion

Vision Problems After a Head Trauma or Concussion

If you notice a change in your vision after head trauma or concussion, you should see an eye care specialist for diagnosis and treatment. At Family Vision – Clemson, our optometrists in Clemson will determine the source of any vision problems that you may experience after receiving a head injury.

.

What You Need to Know

A concussion is a common brain injury for athletes. A concussion can result from a fall, an auto accident, or a blow to your head while playing a sport. Concussions are sometimes considered traumatic brain injuries (TBI). A brain injury disrupts the functioning of your brain.

Head trauma can disrupt the communication between your brain and the eyes, causing vision problems. After a head trauma or concussion, symptoms of vision problems could be as mild as blurry vision or quite severe, leading to blindness.

If you notice any pain or eyesight problems after a concussion, it is best to see an optometrist right away. An optometrist will conduct a comprehensive eye examination to determine the cause of the problem and offer proper treatment.

Vision Problems After Head Traumas And Concussions

Eye Focus Problems

If your vision becomes blurry when you shift focus between far and near objects, you should see an optometrist. Head trauma can disrupt your ability to shift eye focus from a near object to a far object or vice versa.

Eye Movement Problems

If you suddenly cannot follow a moving object like you used to before the concussion, or if you keep getting lost when reading a sentence, you are probably experiencing eye movement problems. An optometrist will help to retrain your vision after a concussion.

Eye Teaming Problems

Are you suddenly seeing double in one of your eyes or both after head trauma? Double vision is an eye teaming problem where you see two images when looking at a single object. You may fail to notice your double vision if it comes and goes. If you suspect that you may be experiencing double vision, an eye exam is the first step to getting it treated.

  • Light Sensitivity
  • Motion Sensitivity, e.g., feeling dizzy when scrolling through your phone
  • Headaches
  • Eye pain
