Dry Eye Treatment

Symptoms of Dry Eye

Dry eye can cause a variety of symptoms. If you have dry eye, you may experience itching, swelling, excessive tears, and a gritty feeling. These symptoms can all occur due to inflammation and insufficient tears. When your eyes function normally, they produce water, oils, and mucus, which help lubricate and protect your eye and remove any contaminants. When your eyes don’t produce these items, they become dry and affect your vision.

Treatment for Dry Eye

Since dry eye develops when your eyes don’t have enough lubricated oils that are produced by the meibomian glands, treatment helps to keep your eyes moist and function normally. Utilizing water alone may not be as effective, as it evaporates too quickly. Along with that, the friction between the eye and eye lids can lead to more irritation.

The simplest treatment involves natural eye drops that combine water and oil ingredients to alleviate your discomfort. This approach tends to work for many who have a mild case of dry eye. However, if you have an advanced case, our optometrists can apply eye treatment that helps the eyelids and meibomian glands function normally again. The treatment compresses the eyelids to clear out blockages and allows the natural oil to flow again.

Platelet-rich eye drops can also be prescribed for treatment and may be more effective for advanced dry eye. The nutrients in these drops provide lubrication and help your eyes heal from friction and irritation.
