Refractive Errors
When a patient has a refractive error, it makes it harder for them to see clearly. Refractive errors occur when the patient has an eye shape that doesn't allow light to focus on the retina correctly. These errors are the vision problems most common in the population. There are four types of these errors: presbyopia, astigmatism, myopia, and hyperopia. Presbyopia happens as a person gets into their 40's, and seeing close up becomes harder. Astigmatism happens when an abnormal shape of the eyeball causes the image to be distorted. Myopia is a condition also called nearsightedness. Hyperopia is farsightedness. All of these eye conditions are treatable with prescription corrective lenses. For some, surgery may also be an option.
Dry Eye and Computer Vision
Dry eye and computer vision are two eye conditions that are becoming increasingly common. They can both be caused by looking at screens for a long time each day. Certain medications and lifestyle activities can also cause dry eye. Specific medical conditions can also cause dry eye. In both conditions, the eyes get dry and tired and may feel fatigued. There are various treatments for these conditions that the optometrist can help you with. Medicated eye drops often help dry eye.
Eye Diseases
There are many common eye diseases that we treat regularly. Glaucoma is a common one that can cause eyesight to be lost. There is no cure for this disease, and it can eventually cause blindness. Macular degeneration is another eye disease that is commonly seen, and it can lead to major vision loss. These conditions are generally found during an annual eye exam, and the optometrist can treat the disease as needed.
